{"id":790,"date":"2025-05-09T14:21:17","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T13:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dasstaging.hotboxstudios.net\/spotlight\/futures-thinking-critical-materials-a-pioneering-approach-to-demand-and-supply-assessment\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T09:07:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T09:07:04","slug":"futures-thinking-critical-materials-a-pioneering-approach-to-demand-and-supply-assessment","status":"publish","type":"spotlight","link":"https:\/\/www.das-int.com\/pl\/spotlight\/futures-thinking-critical-materials-a-pioneering-approach-to-demand-and-supply-assessment\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Materials: A Pioneering Approach to Demand and Supply Assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DAS delivered an <strong>innovative research study <\/strong>for the <strong>UK Government Department for Business and Trade (<\/strong><strong>DBT<\/strong><strong>) <\/strong>and the <strong>UK\u2019s Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre (CMIC) <\/strong>on the <strong>demand and security of the supply of aluminium and copper, <\/strong>which are essential for upgrading the electricity grid in Great Britain. We considered the aluminium and copper requirements for upgrading the grid based on national forecasts of infrastructure projects.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A top-down <strong>Bill of Materials (BoM) approach <\/strong>was used to generate value chain maps of the supply chain, including the mining, refining and component stages. We <strong>identified the bottlenecks <\/strong>along the value chain, including capacity assessments, production concentration risks, comparison with future demand and geopolitical risks. <strong>We also explored the opportunities <\/strong>associated with the circular economy and material substitution. Our research was <strong>delivered at pace <\/strong>and involved the formation of a broad stakeholder group across government, industry, and academia to validate our assumptions and findings through interviews and workshops.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report and recommendations are currently being <strong>used to inform central government and industry of the supply risks and mitigation strategies <\/strong>associated with the UK\u2019s aluminium and copper requirements for upgrading the electricity
